This feature has finally officially rolled out to Android devices today. All Android users around the world can discover new children's shows and TV characters by clicking the "Mystery Box" located in the "Favorites Row" at the top of the Netflix homepage.
The firm updated its previous announcement post from May, saying, "This feature is now available on Android devices for all global members.
The Mystery Box feature works in much the same way as a shuffle button and gives kids and their parents the chance to stumble upon new content in a more playful way. Content in the mystery box changes daily, from Ada Twist, Iggy and Rosie from "Ada Twist, Scientist" to dinosaurs from "Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous.
Moreover, this streaming service includes a decent slate of kids' shows and films, such as popular titles like "Cocomelon," "Gabby's Dollhouse" and Guillermo del Toro's "Pinocchio," which was just nominated for the 2023 Oscars. The streaming service also features dedicated kids' profiles that allow parents to block specific shows and access viewing history.
With Netflix, over the years, there has been experimentation with new means of making such content reach consumers; this included tailored recommendations to screensaver promos and even a shuffle button that plays a random title.
For example, the Play Something feature picks up a title for the viewer based on their preferences. The Kids Mystery Box feature takes the same approach but is designed to be more engaging and entertaining for younger viewers. The feature can be a way in which kids find a new series or rediscover content they have not watched in a long time.
The update comes on the heels of Netflix revamping its iOS app, which features a new billboard layout, card transitions, animation for profile screens and more. It isn’t clear if the Android app will get the same upgrade.
