Netflix today announced that a live-action "Gears of War" film has come aboard, with Jon Spaihts writing. He is known for work on "Doctor Strange" and "Dune.".
Gears of War is one of all-time great action games, said Spaihts, with vivid characters, a beautifully designed world, and a combat system that drives home the lethality of war and importance of standing by your squadmates. It wants to be cinema, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to help that happen.
The news was first reported by Variety on Netflix tapping Jon Spaihts to write the script.
\"Gears of War" is a successful video game franchise with over 40 million copies sold. It came out exclusively for Xbox 360 in 2006. "Gears of War" takes place on the planet Sera where a Locust Horde, these underground reptilian humanoid beings, are threatening humanity.
The live-action movie by Netflix will run through the narration of Delta Squad, a group of infantry members led by sergeant Marcus Fenix, to defeat the Locusts and save their human race from extinction.
It's probably a relief to many gamers that a "Gears of War" movie is finally in the works. There have been several attempts to adapt the film. For example, New Line Cinema snapped up the rights in 2007, and Universal brought on "Collide" writer F. Scott Frazier to adapt the game in 2018, but neither studio followed through.
In November 2022, Netflix partnered with the developer, The Coalition. In addition to the film, Netflix is developing an adult animated series too. As per the streamer, there are so many more scope for other stories as well.
"We are excited to collaborate with Jon and the Netflix team for Gears of War," said The Coalition. Jon is the master storyteller who really has a skill for delivering epic science fiction universes and he does love Gears of War. For us, there isn't anything better than getting a good partner to honour our franchise and deliver a true story to our fans.
