Apparently, Netflix really thinks that Formula 1 and professional golf get along. Streaming service confirmed yesterday that an all-living celebrity golf tournament is coming to the streaming service in November: for the first time live sports on the streamer.
The Wall Street Journal was the first outlet of report last month of live sporting event.
You've seen some of that experimental work that we're going to do like this live golf match in November," said Ted Sarandos, Netflix co-CEO. "We're looking forward to doing that because it becomes a promotional vehicle for our sports brands like 'Full Swing' and 'Drive to Survive.'
No further information was provided on the event, such as a release date, title, or who will be attending. However, Sarandos did say that the live sporting event will include some of the personalities from the two Netflix docuseries, "Formula 1: Drive to Survive" and "Full Swing." He also added that the tournament is strictly a test event.
According to the WSJ, the tournament is a one-time special event held in Las Vegas.
According to reports, Netflix is set to stage its first live sports event, featuring celebrities playing golf. In addition to this live sporting event, Sarandos stated that the company's "position in live sports remains the same." Previously, the company said it would invest in the format only if Netflix thought it will be able to generate "material" revenue.
"We really think that we can have a really strong offering for sports fans at Netflix without having to be part of the difficulty of the economic model of live sports licensing," said Sarandos.
The streamer touted its sports-adjacent programming. Some examples include its latest docuseries "Quarterback" that premiered July 12. The eight-part series follows three NFL quarterbacks: Kansas City Chiefs Patrick Mahomes, the Minnesota Vikings Kirk Cousins and Atlanta Falcons Marcus Mariota.
The streamer added 5.9 million subscribers for the second quarter, bringing that number to 238.4 million subs.
