A Netflix movie is for the first time getting a theatrical sneak preview event across 600 AMC, Regal and Cinemark theaters in the U.S. The historic deal means all three major theater chains agree to show a big-budget Netflix movie for the first time.
Audiences will have the opportunity to see in theaters "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery," the sequel to "Knives Out," on Thanksgiving weekend, November 23 to 29. exactly one month before the movie is released on Netflix's platform on December 23. Tickets go on sale Monday, October 10.
The streaming giant also announced that the film will play in select theaters across the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland, Italy, Germany, Spain, Israel, Australia and New Zealand from yesterday.
Netflix won the rights for "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery" and "Knives Out 3" for a reported $450 million. The streamer is probably hoping the theatrical release will bring new subscribers to the streamer who want to watch the film in their homes. The company experienced a loss of nearly one million subscribers over the summer.
This announcement of our first-ever agreement with Netflix is significant for AMC and for movie lovers around the world," said Adam Aron, AMC Chairman, and CEO. As we have said repeatedly, we believe that theatrical exhibitors and streamers can continue to co-exist well … because of the broader cultural cachet those films can build with a theatrical release they'll be seen by a larger audience when they are also streamed.
Earlier, AMC, Regal, and Cinemark boycotted the movies of Netflix. In 2014, three cinema chains refused to screen Netflix's first original film, "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend" since the companies would not screen a movie that would stream directly to the homes of its consumers at the same time.
And, in 2019, AMC and Regal refused to offer theater showings of Netflix's first nominated best picture film, "Roma." The next year, "The Irishman" and "Marriage Story," the latter of which drew praise for Marriage Story as well as the former's epic "Irishman" length, were not screened at AMC or Regal.
Now, it seems AMC, Regal and Cinemark finally got the message, probably because Netflix movies continue their success streak. Netflix won seven awards during last year's Oscars.
"Knives Out," a box office hit when it was released in 2019, grossed $311.6 million worldwide from a budget of $40 million. So, we assume the sequel will be big at the box office.
