Following another round of layoffs at Netflix, 30 Netflix Animation employees have unfortunately suffered. According to Deadline, the news was first broken, with Netflix confirming to TechCrunch the downsizing of the department.
Earlier this year, Netflix hired Karen Toliver as vice president of Animation Film Content and Traci Balthazor as vice president of Animation Film Production. The company says that in line with the competition in big animation film studios, plans are to downsize, so the animation film production is all nicely scaled under one central leader — Balthazor.
Along with Ivens, Netflix Animation will have a smaller staff going forward in hopes to make even higher-quality films. Streaming service Netflix has many Academy Award-nominated animated titles, such as "Robin, Robin," "Klaus," "The Mitchells vs. The Machines," "A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon," "I Lost My Body" and "Over the Moon." On the list are also "Back to the Outback," "The Willoughbys," "Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood," "The Sea Beast" and more.
The streaming service laid off more than 450 employees in a major workforce reduction over the summer, primarily due to slow revenue growth.
Changes to animated projects can affect up to 70 workers in the animation division, TechCrunch learned in May.
Bad news all around: the streaming giant lost 970,000 subscribers in July, on top of the 200,000 subs lost in April.
