The streaming service has actually revised the "Thumbs Up" feature so users using its mobile app, once in the middle of playing or viewing a piece of content, can then proceed to like or dislike such.
No more returning to a show's or movie's page for that thumbs rating now that users can tap on any point– be they mid-stream or in end credits — and click up the Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down or Two Thumbs Up button atop it all and continue to stream.
Such an update will likely encourage more of its subscribers to use it, thereby helping Netflix with more personalized recommendations based on what they have watched and liked.
"You may be so in the groove with a series you genuinely love that you forget to go to its details page to give it a Double Thumbs Up," said a Netflix spokesperson to TechCrunch. "It is just one easy step that can help us suggest more films and series that are more attuned to your tastes."
The thumbs rating feature has been in existence for six years. Before that, the system was a five-star rating system. That reflected how popular a title was in general to the streaming service and did not reflect the viewing habits by an individual user. The moment Netflix first tested the thumbs ratings, there was 200% activity rise at that time.
The company introduced the Two Thumbs Up button last year to further help the streamer get better feedback from members.
