Netflix announced today that it has rolled out "Profile Transfer, " a feature which allows a member on an existing account to switch over to a brand-new account without rebuilding their profile. This way, they do not lose personal data such as customized recommendations, viewing history, list of favorite shows or movies, and other settings that can be annoying to have lost and start from scratch.
Probably the main reason the streamer launched the new Profile Transfer is to force freeloaders into paying for their own accounts as the feature cracks down on shared accounts.
The new feature is coming today, and the subscription holders worldwide will get their email notifications. Subscribers will be able to find the "Profile Transfer" option on the Netflix homepage, once available, from the profile icon.
The "Profile Transfer" option can also be disabled in account settings.
"People move. Families grow. Relationships end. But throughout these life changes, your Netflix experience should stay the same," Timi Kosztin, product manager, Product Innovation, Netflix, wrote in today's blog. "No matter what's going on, let your Netflix profile be a constant in a life full of changes so you can sit back, relax and continue watching right from where you left off."
The streamer tested the password-sharing feature after it experienced a huge fall in subscribers. Netflix reported that nearly 100 million households contained password freeloaders in the Q1 2022 earnings report.
In March, Netflix launched an "extra members" feature in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru, where subscribers must pay extra for additional people mooching off their accounts. In July, Netflix started testing an "add a home" feature in Argentina, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.
Today's announcement comes at a time when the streaming giant is experiencing a loss of nearly one million subscribers and is in the search for additional revenue-generating avenues. Last week, Netflix launched its cheaper ad-supported tier.
