Netflix has just added a new option that makes sharing clips from Netflix shows across your social networks easier than ever.
Netflix will now introduce its new option called "Moments," an in-player clipping feature that will allow you to create short clips you can re-distribute to your friends.
The pause screen at Netflix is going to sport a new "Moments" icon that, if pressed, enables you to cut into a scene clip that you are currently viewing.
Such a scene clip shall automatically be copied and stored within your "My Netflix" tab and shared out with your desired social network of choice.
The clip would carry a link back to the full movie or show on Netflix, effectively promoting Netflix content on its behalf, while also allowing you to highlight specific segments to friends.
This is a reasonable update from the application, taking into account the social media buzz that the programs it already airs produce. It also represents a considerable step forward in Netflix's digital promotion strategy, however, because, previously, it had actively worked to prevent people from capturing screenshots and distributing content from its shows.
It seems to be embracing the promotional potential of social media discussion, and it has worked out the respective rights concerns for such. Which given that people had already found workarounds for such either way, makes sense.
It's a good way to lean into this type of sharing, and streamline the discussion of key moments to help build hype around Netflix shows. Netflix has also embraced the power of word of mouth on social apps, deploying an army of reviewers to hype its latest shows across different apps, and combined with these clips, that could be a powerful way to maximize attention for its latest releases.
It is not an update of the social media application but relevant for users of social media and understanding of key engagement trends in the app.
Starting today, Netflix's "Moments" option will be rolled out to users on iOS, with Android coming soon.
