Microsoft is cutting about 650 staffers in its gaming division, the latest in a string of job cuts following its $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard, according to an internal memo obtained by online gaming news website IGN. It comes eight months after the company let go of 1,900 staffers in the gaming division.
In a memo to staff, Xbox chief Phil Spencer suggested the latest layoffs were also related to the acquisition:.
"We have determined that, as part of aligning our post-acquisition team structure and managing our business, we must eliminate approximately 650 roles across Microsoft Gaming — mostly corporate and supporting functions — to organize our business for long-term success," the memo reads.
Spencer said that no games, devices, or experiences are getting canceled and that no studios are being closed. But after those last layoffs, Microsoft shuttered a number of game studios, including Tango Gameworks and Arkane Austin.
