With the U.S. Election fast approaching, Meta, Snap and TikTok are among a long list of several other technology companies signing on to the International Foundation for Electoral Systems new Voluntary Election Integrity Guidelines outlining agreed expectations and processes for companies working to "advance election integrity and increase trust in the information ecosystem".
The agreement views platforms working towards set, established principles through election security and integrity measures, hence coming up with enhanced transparencies across the board. Among other companies that have signed up to the new accord includes Google and Microsoft.
IFES states:
"The guidelines will provide a framework for meaningful engagement and support between election authorities and technology companies.". They will establish clear policies and procedures for disseminating information about elections and provide voters-including particularly those in newer, more fragile democracies-access to high-quality information. And they will improve the channels of communication between technology companies and election authorities to strengthen institutions and reduce barriers to helping protect election integrity for smaller and newer companies who wish to be responsible actors around elections.
Since each region has its laws on the sharing of information and how political procedures work, it is really hard to come up with general parameters that apply to all the nations for protection. This new treaty is expected to strengthen the common approach to vote protection in a way that knowledge sharing and cooperation relating to the same matter do not hinder such between the big providers.
Meta explains
These guidelines build on the work we have been doing and provide shared practices that benefit both Meta and our peers during a year when so many elections are happening around the globe.
