I just can't get past the massive faux grill.
Mercedes has unveiled the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV-an electric SUV based on its fantastic EQS SUV. Buyers receive ultra-lux appointments-including bespoke cup holders to hold champagne flutes-in this version.
Back to the grill. The Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV is dripping with historic Maybach design elements: two-tone paint, imposing wheels, a proper hood ornament and, yes, a grill with filigree slats even though it's electric and there isn't a radiator to protect.
Inside the EQS 550 4MATIC + sedan were smart enough to fit some of the most luxurious seats in the business on a difficult shape like the sedan version of this car. The EQS 580 4MATIC + SUV doesn't disappoint, either: wood panels, front-and-rear massaging seats, and more pillows than my bed. The dashboard is equipped with three expansive screens-the instrument cluster, the center stack, and passenger. This is the first Mercedes motor to use vegetable-tanned leather, a treatment that utilizes coffee bean shells as the tanning agents. To Mercedes, this would be an opportunity to discuss its leather sourcing process. Speaking on the leather supply chain, the company said that the leather supply chain is free of any form of illegal deforestation and that the grazing areas do not contribute to the endangerment or loss of natural forests.
This Maybach version of the EQS is mostly identical in its overall dimensions, though the powertrain is significantly more potent than its Merc brother. A high level of power is given by the Maybach edition with an AWD, dual-motor affair that puts out 649 hp and 700 lb-ft. This is a good step up from the standard Mercedes version that hits as much as 536 hp and 633 lb-ft. The electric range is also higher, at a provisional WLTP range of 372 miles on a charge. Its top speed is 130 mph and can hit 60 in only 4.1 seconds.
And even with the impressive powertrain, Maybach buyers mightn't care how it feels to drive this vehicle. Since, after all, Maybach owners don't drive their Maybachs. Maybach owners sit in the back, and their chauffeur drives. To that end, the backseat seems like a lovely place for a road trip. Rear seats are far more luxurious than the fronts and come with their own lot of ventilation, massaging functions and heating for the neck and shoulders. If you choose the Executive Rear Seat Package Plus, the car is also fitted with a calf massager. Should the rear seat recline, the front passenger seat automatically moves forward to offer extra leg room. There is even an option of a refrigerator compartment, folding rear tables, and a special compartment for champagne glasses.
The special EQS seems a sufficiently worthy bearer of the Maybach name, even behind a questionable front end. It's much longer, far more powerful, and full of enough luxury amenities to satisfy even the most ostentatious oil magnate. Price hasn't yet been released; don't expect a bargain.
