This change could lead to a major adjustment in your Instagram posting strategy.
You might have noticed that Instagram is experimenting with a new vertical grid layout on user profiles. Instead of the usual square-shaped thumbnails, the platform is shifting to longer, vertical images in the profile feed.
Some Instagram profiles have already adopted this updated grid format, which is better suited for videos, particularly Reels, due to its new layout. Essentially, it mirrors the Reels grid but applied to the main profile feed, meaning all posts will be adapted to fit this display.
This change, or a variation of it, is expected to roll out to all users soon, as explained by Instagram Chief Adam Mosseri in his recent Q&A session. Mosseri said:
“We’re testing a vertical grid on profiles, for those who haven’t seen it yet, replacing squares. Squares date back to when you could only upload square photos on Instagram. I know this could frustrate some users who put effort into curating their grid, but I want to support today’s creators. The majority of uploads are vertical—either 4:3 for photos or 9:16 for videos—and cropping them to squares can be harsh, so I hope we can manage this transition smoothly.”
As Mosseri pointed out, the update makes sense but could require a complete rethink of how you present your Instagram profile and capture attention with your content.
While the change may seem subtle—simply transforming images into rectangles with more space in the grid—the visual impact could be significant. This shift may also elevate user expectations for video content, as these longer thumbnails have traditionally signaled videos on the platform.
Instagram is clearly aligning its platform more toward video content, reflecting shifts in user behavior, so it’s something to keep an eye on. Be prepared for changes and a potential need to adjust your posting strategy accordingly.
