Instagram is testing a new feature that would allow users to reset their recommendations, the company announced on Tuesday. By resetting your recommendations, you would essentially be starting fresh and retreating the algorithm as it is trained on what you like across the Explore page, the home feed, and the Reels tab.
The feature is for those who feel their content recommendations no longer align with their interests. For example, a user could have liked recipe videos but are no longer interested in them, yet that kind of content may be all they ever see on their Reels and Explore pages.
This feature is much like an initiative that TikTok introduced last year in which users could reset their For You feeds.
Once you reset your Instagram recommendations, your content recommendations will start to personalize again over time based on the posts and accounts you interact with. If you want to reset your recommendations, you will have the opportunity to review your following list in order to unfollow accounts that share content you're no longer interested in.
Apparently, Instagram head Adam Mosseri says, "This feature's not to be used every day," as it is only meant for times when a complete refresh seems inevitable. "I want to be clear, this is a big thing to do," Mosseri said. "It's going to make your Instagram much less interesting at first, because we're going to treat you as if we know nothing about your interests and it will take some time to learn those again. So it's not something I recommend doing all the time — but if you do end up in a place where you really don't feel good about your experience, this gives you an out."
The feature is a new addition to Instagram's list of tools that allow users to curate their recommendations. They can tap or click "Interested" or "Not Interested" on a post to indicate how they feel about what they are seeing and whether or not to see more or less of it. They can also hide content with certain words or phrases in it using the social network's "Hidden Words" feature.
Instagram says that while the tools are designed to help you curate your recommendations on a day-to-day basis, the new option to reset your recommendations is meant to be used when you want to completely start over.
The new feature is rolling out globally "soon," Instagram says.
