Instagram Moves Stories Highlights to a Separate Tab

A change to how your Instagram profile is displayed.
Instagram Moves Stories Highlights to a Separate Tab

Prepare for yet another change to your display of IG, this time with Instagram preparing to move your Story highlights bubbles from above the profile grid, into their own section within your profile tabs.

Instagram is now notifying users that their Story highlights will move to a dedicated profile tab later this week and also appear in your main grid. Though where exactly in the main grid they will appear, is not yet clear - will they show up in the feed in a feed based on the date of the first or last update to the Highlight collection, or some other qualifier?.

The update has been in testing for a while now.

Well, way back in August app researcher Alessandro Paluzzi shared an example of the new profile grid display with the dedicated Story Highlights tab.

the new Story Highlights tab will be signified by a rounded heart icon. Within that, all of your Stories highlights will have their own, vertically aligned thumbnail image, with a separate one for each topic.

The head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, recently explained the change and what they're trying to do, which is to reform Stories Highlights on profiles:

"We're trying to work out how we can make the profile better and get more of the content above the fold, and also simplify it … You will still have control, you can still pin things, there'll be a dedicated Highlights tab, but we don't need to have pogs and squares and have it be all complicated and pushing everything down."

Didn't know that "pogs" were so culturally impactful on web design, but apparently, the current circle feature of Story Highlights is referred to as a "pog" at IG land.

Anyway, Instagram basically aims to streamline the profile display and transferring your highlights "pogs" is one such way to do that, so it's shifting them to their tab below the main info display.

Which will make things cleaner, but I also think it will come with a lot fewer tapped Stories highlights. And then again, I'm guessing most people don't tap on these anyway otherwise IG wouldn't consider moving them.

Or, Stories were always meant to be an ephemeral thing and people didn't see much value in tapping through on your old updates, most of which are outdated.

Or maybe Instagram just believes this is the better way, but in any case, it does appear that IG has finalized its vision for its new display and is now rolling it out to users.

We've reached out to Instagram for further information on this change, as well as clarification on whether it is being rolled out to all users, and we'll update this post as soon as we hear back.
