Instagram is apparently working to provide better security for the temporary message senders by developing a new feature that will prevent screenshots of a temporary DM.
Istagram is planning to introduce screenshot blocking for all DMs shared under "Vanish Mode," or when "View Once" is enabled for any content.
Originally launched in 2020, Vanish Mode is basically an IG take on Snapchat messages, in which you can make your texts disappear as soon as the recipient leaves the chat.
In DMs, users can also set images and video to "View Once", through which you also allow replaying of a video or not, if you choose.
Another thing Instagram has had for ages is screenshotting notification in those modes-too-it serves as some disincentive and transparency. However, banning it in its entirety is a much more serious decision, which may be particularly useful for younger users.
All-new forms of digital bullying have been introduced with the age of social media, usually based around tricking people into saying things that might get them into trouble with others or getting them to share intimate images. Screenshots of those can then be reshared in other forums, provoking broader issues for victims.
Thus, the better option is complete blocking of screenshots, but with a risk that users can make screenshots using another device.
This is why the absolute safest course of action is never to post anything online that you wouldn't be happy to stand behind in public. But, of course, as advice goes, no matter how many times people say it, it's much easier said than remembered in practice, especially for young teenagers who are just getting up to speed on matters of social dynamics.
So, while not a solution by any means, blocking screenshots is the best play.
Applications are now permitted to disable screenshotting in parts of an app on both iOS and Android.
