If you thought almost every application has somehow been working with vertical video, add one more surprising one to the list: Google Play Store. Google has been releasing an original video series called "The Play Report," and through this, people will discover new apps, which will display in the Play Store as well.
According to the company, it will now feature these videos on the home page of the Play Store to a number of users in the U.S. The other users will be allowed to watch them on Google Play's YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram accounts.
While the company didn't specifically mention this treasure, a GIF embedded in the blog post implies these are YouTube Shorts. In addition to the video, users will be offered an install icon for the app the video is discussing.
Google stated each episode will feature experts, creators and even Google employees talking about different apps.
Significantly, Play Store already allows developers to attach YouTube videos as part of their application's media resources, which happens to be visible on the page where an app is listed. It is unclear if Google will eventually offer this short video support on Play Store to other creators or developers, beyond this pilot program. The Android manufacturer also did not say if the apps featured happen to be those that are handpicked by the company or the creators themselves.
Google has already earned a lot from Shorts. In July, during its Q3 2023 earnings call, the company said more than 2 billion logged-in monthly users are watching Shorts. The Play Store is another surface for Google to utilize the short video format to help in app discovery.
