Google prepares more of its generative AI for the U.S. presidential election with greater protections. As first reported in a past note, where the company said it would limit Gemini queries about the upcoming election, it is applying further limits to other products.
These are applied to Search AI Overviews, YouTube AI-generated summaries for Live Chat, Gems and image generation in Gemini. Within the limitations, these AI products will not answer election topics.
Generative AI is relatively such a new technology; Google admits that it can err, hence the limitation of the features to mitigate misinformation around the election.
"For example, presidential and state races depend in large part on us to create accurate and most recent information about matters like who the incumbent candidates are, how people vote and how the race will finish-stuff this new technology can screw up as it learns or when news breaks, according to Laurie Richardson, Google vice president of trust and safety.
Misinformation is the number one issue in any presidential election these days, but things are about to get far worse with the ascendant generative AI-fueled environment that we'll likely see in the 2024 election. What Google announced on Friday is an effort to get ahead of the problem.
The company has also announced that, as with previous elections, Google Search is getting a feature that will help people across the country find information about registering to vote.
Beyond supporting voters in finding reliable election information, Google Play announced a new badge to be carried by apps from official government agencies.
Additional new features on YouTube will, starting with elections, enable users to find credible information about election candidates and political parties. As election day approaches, the video platform will also display reminders on where and how to vote.
