Rarely, if ever, do French newspapers agree on anything. However, the titans of print-Le Monde, Le Figaro and Le Parisien-have made a joint decision to choose a trial-by-case over neighboring rights, according to a statement sent to Reuters and AFP.
Under EU law, digital platforms are under an obligation to negotiate with the publishers for the process of remuneration of news reuse. After a long period of protracted dispute, Meta and Google have finally settled deals with French news publishers.
However, X has refused to negotiate with news publishers for compensation when its users reposted content from these publishers (at least not so far). Therefore, judges of the Paris Court of Justice will now be put to a task that is as difficult as it seems: setting the value of article previews posted on X.
