Following X's Lead, Threads Tests AI-Powered Summaries of Trending Topics

As the Twitter-like social network Bluesky sees a huge jump in users this month, Meta's own X competitor Threads has been quickly building out its platform. On Friday, Instagram head Adam Mosseri said that Threads will begin testing AI-powered summaries of what's being discussed on the platform in the "Trending now" section in the US.

The new feature appears similar to X's Stories feature, which utilizes Elon Musk's AI chatbot Grok to summarize trending topics inside the Explore section of the social network.

Threads is also going to test an expanded set of trending topics, the company said. Additionally, users can now search within a specific date range as well as search for posts from an individual account.

In a post on Threads, Mosseri said the adds are "long-overdue improvements to Search and Trending Now on Threads.

Meta has been hurrying to update Threads at a time when many X users are shifting to Bluesky, which has now hit over 20 million users. The platform has seen an uptick in users since the U.S. presidential election where X became more right-wing, especially after Musk used the social network for President-elect Donald Trump's campaign.

After criticism by users about the algorithm of Threads, the company has now opened up to feedback as it released updates this week to make the algorithmic feed in the app reveal more content from people who you follow.

Earlier this week, the social network launched custom feeds so Threads users may curate feeds around specific topics or certain user profiles. The tool allows Threads to compete with Bluesky's own features that let users build their own algorithms, feeds, and lists.

It's important to note that Threads has an incredibly larger number of users than Bluesky does, as it has over 275 million monthly active users. However, market intelligence firm Similarweb has shown that Bluesky is catching up with Threads on the daily active user scale. The firm believes that if the social network can continue to sustain its current growth rate, it could eventually catch up with Threads.
