In a statement Friday, Epic Games, maker of Fortnite, said that the company has launched its competing iOS app store in the European Union. The company is also opening the Epic Games Store up to Android users worldwide.
Titles playing on the store include Fortnite, Rocket League Sideswipe, and Fall Guys, among others. Developers will apparently work with the company to launch their games on the Epic Games Store in the future.
Epic Games is also bringing its games to independent mobile store AltStore PAL, the app store of which was announced yesterday to be offered for free because of the grant by Epic Games.
It said in the future to bring its games to the iOS store of Aptoide in EU and ONE Store on Android.
Return of Fortnite to iOS comes few years after Apple first removed it from the App Store, starting years of legal battles between the two companies as well as regulatory changes brought about by EU's Digital Markets Act which will be forcing Apple to open up to new rivals.
"The tide is turning, and the mobile ecosystem is finally opening up to competition," said Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney in a statement. "We are grateful to the European Commission for making it possible to launch the Epic Games Store and offer our games to iOS users in the European Union.". Now at last users of iOS in Europe and all Android users are allowed to enter our store and play our games as they have always been able to on an open platform like a PC or Mac. It is by far from over, but this is material progress for developers and consumers who can finally start to reap the rewards of competition and choice.
Tutorials for installing the Epic Games Store have been put on videos to guide users in the steps they have to undertake while installing the Epic Games Store on iOS and Android.
For now, "the process of installing the Epic Games Store on iOS and Android is lengthy due to Apple and Google introducing intentionally poor-quality install experiences laden by multiple steps, confusing device settings, and scare screens," according to Epic Games.
The launch of the Epic Games Store marks the first time Apple has faced a known opponent seeking to gain better control of the shelf space of App Store.
