Apple recently just launched iOS 18.1.1, but iOS 18.2 will bring "Image Playground," one of its more exciting features for creating images: essentially a text-to-image generation feature to create cartoon-like images.
So here is everything you should know about the Apple Intelligence feature: what it is, how to use it, and when it's coming.
What is Apple's Image Playground?
Image Playground is part of Apple Intelligence, which is a series of AI-driven tools from Apple. The new feature allows users to input a text prompt, and the AI will generate an image that has a cartoon style.
You can access Image Playground through the dedicated image creation app or through the Messages app by clicking the plus (+) button on the left side of the text box.
The Playground app is available on the Home Screen; look for an icon that resembles a white cat or fox (or possibly another furry creature; we’re not completely certain).
How to generate images with Playground
Using Image Playground is pretty easy. Like other image generators, there is a text input area where you can describe an image and let the AI create it for you, such as "a dog blowing out birthday candles on a cake.
If the results aren't exactly what you wanted, you can adjust the results with more detailed descriptions or choose one of Apple's recommendations. You'll see several image options to swipe through and select.
This has the option of uploading an image of yourself or your family pet or other family members to generate AI-generated imagery of them; you might add a party hat so they can wear it and other elements, including changing art style.
How long after launch will the image have been in operation?
This image playground is actually within iOS 18.2 public beta; this version is accessible by signing up for Apple's Beta software program. This general public release will start getting issued in December.
