Amazon Prime Video may be stepping into the live news space, albeit for a single night.
According to Variety, the platform is in discussions with veteran NBC and MSNBC anchor Brian Williams to host a live Election Night special. This move would position Amazon to compete with traditional TV news outlets by offering non-partisan coverage of the U.S. presidential election results.
Although Amazon has built its streaming empire on on-demand content, it has recently expanded into live programming, most notably through Thursday night NFL broadcasts. Even Netflix, which had long avoided live sports, signed a deal with WWE earlier this year.
Amazon has not yet responded to TechCrunch's request for comment, and Variety notes that the company does not plan to launch regular news programming, treating this Election Night special as a one-time event.
