Australia Considers Banning Social Media Access for Kids Under 16

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Wednesday plans in the country to ban social media for children under 16, saying that "social media is doing harm to our kids, and I'm calling time on it."

There'll be no exemptions for parental consent, so the likes of Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, X, and likely YouTube will bear responsibility for ensuring that children can't get on," Albanese said, according to a Reuters report.

The policy in Australia is one of the strictest, but several other countries are following in its footsteps. Last month, Norway's prime minister declared that the country will eventually prohibit the use of social media to those under the age of 15, up from 13, arguing "we need to campaign against the very profit-driven tech companies that are pitted against small children's brains.".
