Apple is reportedly working with a Chinese automaker for years developing a battery system for its now-abandoned car project.
According to Bloomberg, Apple was working with BYD Co., a Shenzhen-based carmaker, to produce batteries filled with lithium iron phosphate cells. According to reports, Apple's engineering expertise, areas of heat management, and advanced battery packs had been joined with the use of BYD's resources on manufacturing and proprietary LFP technologies.
As Bloomberg explained, the battery is meant to be safer than most EV batteries at that time with a much longer driving range.
Apple canned its plans for a car back in February after reportedly spending roughly $1 billion a year on the project since 2014. Though it ultimately didn't pan out, the effort wasn't a complete failure; Bloomberg notes that battery insights gained from the car project helped other Apple teams develop the Vision Pro and Neural Engine chip.
