In a move to counter Spotify's fast growth in the audiobook space and nudge some of its music subscribers to buy Audible books or plans, Amazon has announced that it is going to let Amazon Music Unlimited subscribers access one audiobook per month from the Audible catalog at no cost.

The company mentioned that subscribers to the top plan in U.S., U.K., and Canada can listen to any audiobook they want. Users can continue listening to the chosen title through subsequent billing cycles or select a new title.

“Today, Amazon Music introduces the audiobook category to a brand-new audience by making Audible’s industry-leading catalog of audiobooks available to Amazon Music Unlimited subscribers,” Steve Boom, VP of Audio, Twitch and Games for Amazon, said in a statement.

Last year, Amazon increased the price of its Amazon Music Unlimited plan for both individuals and families.

The rival, Spotify, became the No. 2 audiobook provider earlier this year. The company already offers a selection of free audiobooks with Spotify Premium in the U.S. and U.K., Australia, Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand. Spotify also rolled out an audiobook-only plan in March, which gives users on its free tier access to its catalog in the U.S. with a 15-hour listening cap.

It also provides a $7.95 per month deal with original audiobooks, sleep tracks, and podcasts. But Audible also offers a $14.95 plan, for which you receive one title per month from the company's premium selection, including best sellers and new releases.

The e-commerce giant has been looking to strengthen its book recommendation engine across platforms. Last December, Amazon introduced the "Your Books" tracker that combined titles you bought or saved from Amazon, including those found on Kindle and Audible. This past spring, Amazon indicated it would use data from Prime Video to provide targeted audiobook recommendations to users of its service, Audible.
