Amazon unveiled on Wednesday new AI-powered package retrieval technology for its electric vehicle fleet. The vision-based tech will help the driver give packages a higher priority.
Vision-Assisted Package Retrieval highlights packages with a green circle or red light, showing which packages are to be delivered at the current stop. The company says such technology will prevent drivers from having to stop the van and shuffle around looking for the right package every time.
There is also audio feedback that will remind the driver if he has selected the correct packages. The company says this way, it would do away with one of the devices being towed behind by delivery drivers these days- which are hand held.
Amazon said the VAPR system has been under development since early 2020. "We had to think about factors that are unique to the delivery experience, such as lighting and space constraints inside vans," said product manager John Colucci in a release.
The technology is earmarked to be integrated on 1,000 of the retail behemoth's electric Rivian vans by early 2025. The company has been quietly piloting the technology in a few markets, including Boston, where it reports that drivers have shaved time from two to five minutes per stop down to less than a minute.
