Amazon is considering a more significant investment in Anthropic, an OpenAI rival.
Amazon is in advanced talks to sink tens of billions of dollars into Anthropic, the firm's first significant financial investment into the company since a $4 billion deal reached last year, according to a report from The Information. The new investment follows the same structure as the previous round-but has one fundamental difference. Amazon wants Anthropic to train its AI using silicon created by Amazon on Amazon Web Services.
Anthropic likes the Nvidia chips. But the money may be too good to pass up. Late last year, Anthropic reportedly projected it would spend more than $2.7 billion in 2024 to train and scale up its AI products. Anthropic has been talking new funding for a few months at a $40 billion valuation, according to The Information, and no doubt the pressure is on to get something done soon.
It has so far raised $9.7 billion–just shy of half the $21.9 billion amass by OpenAI.
